Negative space is part of the subject

An empty area can give a small object room to become noticeable. It can also establish direction: a figure looking into open space feels different from one looking toward the edge.

Try making three versions of the same arrangement with different amounts of space. Compare the feeling of each before deciding which one communicates what you intended.
